Cycling tours around the Normandy beaches - explore some of the D-Day landing sites.

6th-13th October 2018

This 6 night package is based in a holiday village in the pretty town of Courseulles-sur-Mer. The park itself neighbours a small marina and leisure development including a number of great restaurants, just a few of minutes from the beach.

The town is surrounded by some beautiful country side which contrasts with scenes from 1944 - you're at the heart of the Normandy Beaches - the Juno Beach museum is just a short walk away.

The surrounding area includes the towns of Caen, Arromanches, and Bayeux or if you fancy a longer trip out, visit picturesque Honfleur.

Our sample itinerary looks like this:

  • Day 1 - arrive at our base, get settled in. Welcome dinner.
  • Day 2 - after a quick maintenance check over your bikes we will head out for a gentle ride, around 20 miles / 700ft of climbing, to familiarise guests with some of the landmarks.
  • Day 3 - Another relatively easy ride - this time a little longer and hilly as we head out again along the beaches towards Arromanches and beyond.
  • Day 4 - A day off to go and do your own thing - we can recommend a selection of destinations worth exploring
  • Day 5 - Our biggest ride so far, at about 35 miles and 1200ft of climbing as we visit Pegasus Bridge and the museum adjacent to this key Allied forces landing zone. Don't forget, what goes up must come back down!
  • Day 6 - optional final ride, or take time to visit some more of the local sights of Normandy. Bayeaux anyone?
  • Day 7 - Time to loadup and head off at the end of your VeloTours cycling tour

Our accommodation

Our accommodation will not be finalised until close to the event date as we will adapt according to booked numbers. What we can offer on-site:

  • Bricks and mortar - we're not going to be camping!
  • Our preferred option is a number of properties within a holiday village - these are a mix of 1 and 2 bed apartments and houses. In addition to the cycling you also have on-site an indoor swimming pool. Close by are a range of restaurants, tennis and golf amongst other amenities. Basic WiFi is included or a premium service can be made available for an additional charge.
  • We will ensure the property is safe and suitable
  • On site parking for 1 car per couple/room
  • Breakfast will be provided on site - dinner may be at local restaurants but is included for each day
  • You will have somewhere secure to store your bikes when not in use

Who is this tour designed for?

  • Pretty much anyone! Most of our guests are couples, occasionally with older children.
  • Requirements are that you can achieve an average speed of about 8-10 mph over 30 to 40 or so miles, and don't jump off at the sight of hills. Some of the hills around here may look daunting, but anyone with a basic level of fitness should be fine. Remember that we aren't riding 30 miles straight out - there will be opportunities to stop along the way for photos, coffee (and pastries) and lunch.
  • We recommend you have a suitable bike - road or hybrid is perfect, MTB is great although we do stick to roads or surfaced tracks.
  • A simple knowledge of bike maintenance would be beneficial although we will be on hand and will have a range of tools with us too. We recommend you bring some spares with you, such as tyres/tubes, maybe a chain and anything specific to your bike (e.g. spare rear derailleur hanger).
  • The tour is designed for a group of 6 to 10 people (3 to 5 couples, ideally) plus our host/ride leader.

What's included?

  • 6 nights bed & breakfast in a twin or double bedroom
  • Dinner on each evening - either at our accommodation or in a local restaurant, to include some local wine
  • We'll stop somewhere suitable for lunch - a café en-route - you should pay your own bill here.
  • Services our our tour host/ride leader

So how much?

£895 per person

We've priced the tour based on couples - each room is based on 2 people sharing. Single rooms may be available, at additional cost (£200 per single occupancy room)

Not included is your travel to and from our tour. You can join us by car. Ferry or channel tunnel + around 160 miles on French autoroute - toll approx. 15€ each way, from the Dieppe area, or from Calais around 230 miles / 30€). You could also use Portsmouth-Caen Ouisterham which will deliver you just a 30 minute journey on the French side - you could even cycle it in a little over an hour... Another ferry option would be to land at Le Havre or Cherbourg, also from Portsmouth.
